Vodafone Meet LiveGuy promo - treasure hunting web 2.0 style

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

For those of you who haven’t seen it Vodafone launched quite a low-key viral/promo this week to promote their range of Vodafone Netbooks called Meet LiveGuy.

The idea is quite cool, LiveGuy will be visiting 12 cities in the UK over the next two weeks. He posts clues and photos etc. on the site each day and you have to go and find him. If you do find him and say the winning phrase “You’re LiveGuy and I’m a Vodafone winner” then you win a Vodafone Netbook. You get 3 chances to meet him each day, from 9am-12pm, 12pm-3pm and the final slot is 3pm-6pm. You also get a 4th chance to win each day by entering online at 5.45pm.

In true web 2.0 style as well as the Meet LiveGuy site you can also join his group on Facebook, follow him on Twitter, view his Picasa album and even the YouTube channel. I think the concept is actually really good, and I have no doubt Vodafone will be following it closely to see how effective it is. Since the first day of the challenge, Monday just gone I’ve noticed a few more links appear on the “people are talking” slot on the bottom left half of the website. It looks like this is just beginning to take off and take traction, it will be very interesting to see how it pans out by the end of next week.

For me the fun started on Monday when Fraser announced that he was going to try and find LiveGuy in his home town of Edinburgh. I texted Fraser with the clues posted on the blog and eventually he was lucky enough to find LiveGuy and win!!

Today was the day that LiveGuy was due in Newcastle so Fraser pinged me this morning to ask if I was going to go into town to try and track LiveGuy down. To be honest I had loads of work on and couldn’t really afford the time away from the PC. However my cousin Stephanie said she was in Newcastle today and fancied giving it a go. She’s an impoverished student who could really use a Netbook anyway so would rather she went for it than me. The first winner of the day had already been announced, local affiliate Dan Robins had ventured down to the Quayside before catching a train and had won. This meant we had to go for the 12pm slot to try our chances. So Steph ended up pounding the pavements and thanks to the clues and Twitters from LiveGuy she managed to find him about a hour before the 12pm slot. From there she tracked him and followed him and even helped him read his map ) for the next hour until she finally won outside Saint James’s football stadium. Well done cousin!

I suspect there will be a lot of other stories like this one over the next few days - which is exactly what Vodafone will be hoping for. I wonder if it will be worth it? Will the amount of PR they get in blogs, and maybe local news press be worth the expense of setting the LiveGuy site up and undertaking the campaign? I’d like to think so, it’s a really original concept that they’ve executed beautifully. Well done guys.

My cousin Steph with LiveGuy winning her prize!

Congratulations to the 2 winners of the A4U Expo tickets!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

On Saturday morning I used the Truly Randon Number Generator to pick a winner from the 37 blog comment entries to my competition to win 1 of 2 A4U Expo tickets.

The first winner the generator picked out was comment number 11 from Doug. As Doug is speaking on the same panel as me, he clearly doesn’t need a ticket, so I tried again )

The next number was 9 which was Christina Armstrong, a travel affiliate from Tenerife Holidays amongst others. She packed in her full time job as a solicitor last year to do Affiliate Marketing full time and this will be her first time attending the Expo.

Then came number 35 which was Johhny Ratcliffe from Topsearch.co.uk. Johnny currently consults on SEO and eCommerce for SMEs who need to rule niche searches, whilst branching into Affiliate Marketing.

If you haven’t registered for the A4U Expo yet then it’s not too late. You can also use the code SPK10 to get 10% off.

To celebrate the second A4U Affiliate Expo taking place in London on the 14th and 15th October I’m giving away 2 full affiliates passes worth £299 each. As well as access to the exhibition and all of the presentations these passes will also give you entry to the 3 parties taking place too )

So what do you have to do to win? Well I’ve tried to make it as easy as possible, all you need do is look at the Day 1 agenda and the Day 2 agenda and then tell me which presentation you are looking forward to the most. I don’t need War and Peace, just a few words on what you think will be the most interesting.

To kick things off, here’s a few that I’m looking forward to:

Day 2, 4.30pm to 5.30pm: “Meet the Super Affiliates”

In this session myself, Doug and Jamie will be answering questions from the audience about any aspect of affiliate marketing. Between the 3 of us we cover a ton of niches and all drive traffic to our sites in different ways. I really enjoyed this session last year, so look forward to seeing everyone again this year and interacting with everyone. If anyone has anything in particular you would like us to cover for the talk then please get in touch.

Day 2, 9.30am to 10.30am: “The mydeco Story - Life as a Start-Up in Affiliate Marketing”

I’m really looking forward to hearing David Kelly, the CEO of Brent Hoberman’s mydeco tell us all about how the high profile startup embraced affiliate marketing as one of it’s core methods of monetisation.

Day 1, 3pm to 4pm: “Extreme SEO Strategies for Affiliates”

A well respected panel full of SEO experts including Dave Naylor will make this a must-see presentation doing exactly what it says on the tin.

So there you go, there’s 3 of my top picks although I must admit I could have listed 10 more, as there is loads of great stuff to choose from. Leave your comments below on what presentation you would like to see and I will pick 2 winners after the closing date of midnight 26th September 2008.

Buyagift come up trumps with the best affiliate incentive ever

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

The Sky incentive that I was delighted to win back in July held the title for the best affiliate incentive ever - to date. But could they be about to lose their crown to Buyagift?

Take a look at this thread on the A4U Forum, Buyagift are giving affiliates the chance to choose what incentive they would like to aim for this year. And I don’t mean you get to pick between an iPod, USB something-or-other and a digital picture frame. None of that for Buyagift; just take a look at these prizes…

(Note: I had to resize the image below to fit on this blog but you can see it in clearer detail using the link above)

Buyagift Incentive

It’s always been one of my ambitions to drive across the west coast of the USA in a muscle car so that particular prize gets my vote. In the past I have to be honest and admit that I’ve never really promoted Buyagift - not because they don’t have a good affiliate programme, they do - but because I don’t have any sites in that niche and it’s a very competitive sector. But this year, if the drive across the USA gets picked as the prize I’ll change that and find a way to push Buyagift. So it just goes to show that an incentive like this goes a long way to getting new and existing affiliates excited.

I’ve talked about their affiliate manager Graham Keen before here and here. He’s one of the top affiliate managers in the UK and certainly knows how to inspire and motivate affiliates. Well done Graham on what could well be the best affiliate incentive ever.

The next big thing? Affiliate opportunity - Sony eBook Reader

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

I remember at last year’s A4U Expo when I was on the “Ask the Super Affiliates” panel, we were all asked what the “NEXT BIG THING” will be. To be honest I don’t think any of us gave the real answer as why would we? We all wanted to keep our thoughts to ourselves so we could make the most of it with little or no competition.

The thing is that the “next big thing” comes along quite often, if you keep your eyes and ears open. Another case in point is the FitFlop. A few weeks ago there was some chat on the A4U forum about this product, so much so that a representative from FitFlop joined in the debate. So…always being on the lookout for opportunities I created my very own fitflop landing page and watched to see what would happen. Sure enough Google liked the post and before long I was appearing on the first page of Google for a load of fitflop terms and I’m making some nice money from it.

So this time I thought rather than cash in on the “next big thing” I thought I would share it with you guys. Not only that but I’m going to give one away too )

The product in question is the Sony eBook Reader. It’s available from Sony Style for £199 and as luck would have it, Sony Style have an affiliate programme on TradeDoubler whereby affiliates can earn 5% commission on this product. So approx. £10 a sale, not bad.

So what makes you think the Sony eBook reader is the next big thing?

A few things actually. When I read this piece in the Telegraph the following paragraph really stood out to me:

What has been the Reader’s impact in the US?

Last year, online book giant Amazon.com launched its Kindle reader and Sony introduced the Reader, which catapulted e-books into the mainstream consumer environment. Industry experts say that sales growth has been gradual rather than meteoric, but the fact that Amazon now offers more than 140,000 different titles for the Kindle demonstrates the potential.

It was the figure of 140,000 eBooks on Amazon that highlighted the potential for this product. Also, Waterstones will be supporting the Sony eBook Reader in the UK and already have about 25,000 titles to buy.

Want more? A bit of research shows that the product is certainly picking up press:

iGizmo
Trusted Reviews
Telegraph
PC Advisor
T3 online

Even though eBook readers have been around for a while, nobody has really perfected the technology and brought it to market. I think that’s about to change as the Sony model has the capacity to store up to 160 books on the reader (more via SD or memory card) and has decent battery life (7500 page turns on average). There is no backlight, it has clever “eInk” technology and is also very slim and lightweight, unlike previous models.

So, take all of that on board and the fact that we’re coming up to Christmas - I would certainly envisage there being a high demand for the Sony eBook Reader.

So how can affiliates capitalise on this opportunity?

PPC - You can’t bid on the brand term “Sony” but you can bid on “ebook reader” and variations. A quick check on Google shows that there isn’t that much competition on these terms, so I’m sure there is opportunity there. You could also get really creative and use the titles of some popular books that are available as eBooks in your search terms. These key phrases can be bought *really* cheaply and the volumes on some of them are huge.

SEO - As per my example with FitFlops if you have an established site/blog then why not dedicate a page to the Sony eBook reader and see how it fairs in the search engines? I’m thinking that there isn’t much competition about so you should be able to rank quickly and easily. Just in time for Christmas )

The Sony Style affiliate programme on TradeDoubler is being managed by i-level and being on the ball, they already have some creative live featuring the Sony eBook reader. The guys at i-level are very keen to work closely with affiliates on this programme too and are available to help with enquiries and tips on how to get the best from the programme.

If you’re already signed up to the campaign please use this deeplink replacing XXXXXX with your TD affiliate ID.

http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(57701)a(XXXXXX)g(17066594)url(http://www.sonystyle.co.uk/deeplink.do?s=external&ss=promotion_e-reader_en_gb)

If you are not signed up to the campaign currently, please go here.

Win a Sony eBook Reader

If that wasn’t enough then I’m delighted to announce that I’ve teamed up with i-level who are managing the Sony Style affiliate programme - to give a Sony eBook Reader to one lucky affiliate!

To be in with a chance of winning the excellent new Sony eBook Reader, simply put some links up on your site. When your links are live, please send the url along with your Tradedoubler affiliate ID to sonyaffiliates@i-level.com. Entries must be received by 13th September 2008 and one entry will be selected at random on that date to receive the Sony eBook Reader.

How easy is that? Fair too, as any affiliate can be in with a chance of winning. Good luck!!

2. Based on House of Fraser’s launch 5% net commission, how much would the sale of a Hugo Boss, formal single-breasted stretch wool suit earn an affiliate?

House of Fraser’s first affiliate promotion with Commission Junction begun on 26 June, to coincide with its SALE Event. Product feeds and other tools are available for the SALE and in preparation for the key Autumn and Christmas period.

One key difference with the House of Fraser programme is that it works with cashback, reward and loyalty sites – making it one of the few department store affiliate programmes who do. They are also looking to work with paid search, content and social media sites.

Chris Bishop, Online Acquisition Manager at House of Fraser said “We’re excited to have brought Commission Junction on board to scale our affiliate marketing programme. Having launched our first transactional website in September 2007, our absolute focus is now to educate and work with the publisher community on what we can offer, which will drive new customers and therefore revenue increases for both them and us.

By building strong relationships, developing new and exciting tools and rewarding affiliates accordingly, our goal is to have the best retail affiliate marketing programme in the UK next year.”

If you have a query about the affiliate programme contact CJ or Chris directly at House of Fraser.

Thanks to Sky and Buy.at

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I just wanted to post a quick thankyou to both Buy.at and Sky for a fantastic VIP experience at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last weekend. I had an absolutely brilliant day, made even better by the fact that I was there to see Lewis Hamilton win his first British GP. It was also great to see such a cross-section of affiliates in attendance and not just the usual suspects. Good on Sky for reaching out and rewarding affiliates from all sectors

Thanks to Darren too for the picture of Lewis blasting round the track in the wet.

Best affiliate incentive ever - Sky

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Sky

I love incentives. I really do. Even the small incentives that give you the chance to win say a mobile phone, iPod or TV incentivise me to work closer with particular merchants. But…every now and again incentives crop up that money just can’t buy.

This is one of them.

Sky are giving 5 affiliates the chance to win a VIP trip to the British Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone in July. What makes this prize very special is what’s included in the incentive:

You will have a place at our table in The Copse which overlooks one of the fastest corners from inside the circuit and is located near the Paddock. You can rub shoulders with some of the greatest names in British motor sport in the exclusive Drivers Lounge or enjoy a garden party atmosphere in the terrace-style restaurant. The package includes

• Circuit and hospitality admission
• VIP wallet containing itinerary
• Centre transfer
• Reserved grandstand seating
• Balcony/ terrace viewing
• Carparking
• Chefs Table (breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea)
• Post race afternoon tea
• Champagne served all day
• Full bar
• Televisions/ Replays/ Interviews
• Souvenir programme per person
• Admission to Copse Restaurant & Marquee
• Hosts/ Hostesses/ Security

For me that really is a money-can’t-buy prize, as a devout F1 fan I can tell you that entry into the Drivers Lounge alone is something that most fans will give their right arm to experience.

So hats off to Sky for creating such an attractive incentive for their affiliates. I almost didn’t want to blog about it here as I want to enter and don’t want to hinder my chances of winning by promoting it to other affiliates. But at the end of the day I think it’s such a brilliant incentive that it deserves to be shouted about.

So how do you win?

Pole Position 1 & 2

These places will go to the top two affiliates with the most improved new Sky sales this quarter. The improvement is based on the number of new Sky sales achieved during 1st January to 27th March compared to what you achieve during the competition period. So it doesn’t matter if you made 1, 10 or 100 sales you are in with a chance of getting pole position.

Chequered Flag

This place will go to the affiliate who sells the most Sky packages. Sky packages that qualify for this place are Sky+, broadband mid/max, sky Talk and Sky HD, broadband mid/max, sky talk. Show you can be first past the chequered flag by selling the latest in home entertainment and technology packages and join us for a champagne day out!

Podium Position

This place will be won by the new affiliate who achieves the highest Sky new customer sales during the competition period. To qualify as a new affiliate you will have not made a sale in the previous six months or be new to the programme. Rev up your promotion of Sky now and build to a consistent level of sales to join us to see Lewis Hamilton on the podium at Silverstone.

Winners Wreath

F1 is all about the cars, skill, speed and style. So this place will go to the affiliate site that is deemed to have the best promotion of Sky on their sites. Sites will be rated and the affiliate site with the highest rating at the end of the quarter will win the place. This is not just about a nice Sky splash page but about good content sites, demographic partners, blogs, shopping portal sites, product related sites and the like. To qualify for this prize please send your urls to skycomp@buy.at. Sites will be viewed on a monthly basis and if any pricing or offer changes occur. However, feel free to send us as many updates you have made anytime and remember sales will help with ratings!

As you can see Sky have made it very fair and all affiliates, big or small can win this prize. So what are you waiting for? The Sky affiliate programme is available on Buy.at with generous commissions ranging from £40-£100+ for new Sky customers as well as commission on Sky customers upgrading to Sky HD, Sky Broadband and Sky Talk.

There is also a fantastic customer competition running at the moment whereby customers can win a VIP trip to Hollywood. All the better for increasing conversion rates.

Sky take their affiliate channel very seriously and there are always incentives like this or opportunities to earn increased commisson rates. They are a very pro-active merchant and always listen to feedback and are more than willing to offer extra advice and support on how to promote their programme. So log onto Buy.at today and sign up.

Win a MacBook Air from sunshine.co.uk

Friday, March 14th, 2008

New online travel merchant sunshine.co.uk are launching a competition to win a fantastic new MacBook Air…

sunshine.gif

…just by adding a banner to your site!!!

As an incentive to get sunshine.co.uk onto your site, for March they are offering 1 entry into their prize draw for a gorgeous MacBook Air for every website you have links on. On top of this every 5 sales in March gets you another ticket. As a prize offering it’s a great way to get your programme noticed as the MacBook Air is just about the most desirable gadget on the planet at the moment!

macbook-air1.jpg

Simply sign up to Affiliate Future, add your links and then email chris.c [at] sunshine.co.uk with the URLs when you’re done. With a launch commission of 10% until the end of March, the MacBook Air should be just the push you need to get copying and pasting that link code.

sunshine.co.uk is owned and was created by Chris Brown and Chris Clarkson (the two guys who recently sold Holidaywatchdog.com to TripAdvisor for an undisclosed amount) and their senior developer Alan Gilmour.

As affiliates turned merchants they knew exactly what they would want from a travel merchant and designed the site to be the most affiliate friendly site in the sector. All bookings are online, with no leakage to any call centre (go on… try and find the phone number!). With an affiliate management team who have been there and done it as affiliates, they’ll go above and beyond to sort you out with customised banners, search boxes, XML or any special requirements you’ll have.

For more information on the programme contact chris.c [at] sunshine.co.uk
