ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six Figure Income - Book Review
One of the handful of blogs I read every day is the ever popular ProBlogger by Darren Rowse. He has been blogging since 2002 and now owns a network of blogs with hundreds of employees, which is a multi million dollar business.
Chris Garrett is the other author of this book and also a well known figure in the world of Internet Marketing.
So put them together and I thought this is a book I need to own!
At the time of writing the book is available from Amazon for £10.39, so not a bad investment I thought. The book itself starts out with introductions from both Darren and Chris telling their respective stories of how they got to where they are today. While this is interesting I found myself wishing for more detail. Maybe it’s just me but I find the journey that anybody undertakes on the road to success as absolutely fascinating. We get a bit of this from Chris and Darren but I would have loved to read much more about the blood, sweat and tears they each shed on their way to success. I would have also loved to hear more about the money. Yes I said it, no use pretending we’re not in this for the cash so I would have found it hugely motivating to read exactly how much Problogger makes or any of the other blogs both authors own. Sadly, the guys seem to be too polite to go into this area in any depth. Shame as the sub title of the book is “Secrets for blogging your way to a six-figure income”.
Now I have to be honest here, I didn’t learn anything new from the book. I’m not saying that I know everything there is to know about blogging but maybe as I’ve been at it for over 3 years I’m not the book’s target audience. The book seems to be aimed at the newbie blogger, hence the chapter about choosing and setting up a blog from scratch. Fine, I don’t have a problem with that. However I was hoping to learn something new from the chapters like “Blog Income and Earning Strategies” or “Secrets of Successful Blogs” - however I didn’t. The advice given is all good and everything the guys say makes sense and is logical, it’s just that it’s nothing I haven’t seen before.
One thing that I did like about the book is how the chapters and case studies etc are laid out in a blog format. I.e. short paragraphs, lots of bullet points and a good use of graphics to back up the examples given. It means that reading it isn’t a chore or too heavy, you can dip in or out whenever you get a spare minute. It also reminded me that a lot of what’s in the book has also appeared on ProBlogger at some point. Again, nothing wrong with that as the book isn’t aimed at his long standing blog readers.
I have a few friends who are fascinated by what I do and how I actually earn money from blogging and the Internet. It’s these people who I think will benefit most from this book. It explains in a clear, concise way exactly what blogging is and how you can make it work for you. So maybe I’ll buy a few extra copies to keep in for Christmas presents
